Toby's Stitches - August 3, 2008 : Cause? Getting worked in a hole that already had another person in it (Erin) Result? Seven stitches, bitches! Oh, and a nice swollen cheek too... Here is Toby's long trip report Yes, the rumors are true... I managed to get hurt on the Savage yesterday. Our girls trip started out great... Helene, Sarah, Erin, Marka, Ally, and myself. We were having fun making our way down the river. We hopped out, took a look at the dam... watched a few people do the boof, a few people run the river right line... watched one guy get worked and held under for a LONG time on the right line... then we got back in our boats and all ran the boof on river left. Lots of fun! We continued down, and Helene made sure to point out that, while she had been going first quite a bit, she was not LEADING, as she didn't really know what was where or anything. We joked that only I should follow her, since she owed me one lead into a hole (I unintentionally led her into a nasty hole in PSH on the Lower Gauley a couple years back where she got worked). We come up to a rapid that Helene said she thought she usually ran on the right. But then we watched Sarah and Ally go down the left. Helene starts out and wavers, which led to her going straight down the middle. I'm not 100% clear on what happened, but I think Sarah and Ally managed to make it through unscathed, but the rest of us were not so lucky. There was a nasty hole in the middle that basically had two pourovers feeding it, one on the left and one on the right. Marka made her way into that hole and got tossed around a little bit. Then it was Helene's turn... she bumped Marka out of the hole, and proceeded to get held... As she was about to do a bow squirt to try to get herself out, she saw Erin about to drop in on her, and she tucked and flipped. Erin dropped into the hole and started getting tossed about. As I approached I saw the hole and Erin and Helene stuck in it a little too late to try to change course, so I tried to boof the pourover, unsuccessfully. I landed in the hole with them... at some point Helene got released... I got tossed around a bit and hit *something*... not sure we'll ever know if I hit my boat, my paddle, Erin's boat or paddle, a rock... who knows! But, I finally rolled up, paddled over to the eddy, and asked Sarah "am I bleeding?" "YUP!" Sarah did a great job keeping me calm, Erin broke out her first aid kit, and we got the bleeding under control a bit. Ally and Helene got a couple pictures :-) Helene and Marka offered to hike out with me, as it was evident that stitches were in my future. Marka ran up to the road and hitched a ride back to her car while Helene, Sarah, and Erin carried the boats up to the road, and Sarah led me up. Ally, Erin, and Sarah continued down the river while Marka, Helene, and I headed to Cumberland to find the hospital and get me stitched up.
